1. Introduction
Weather resistance is one of the most important qualities of glass blocks. Unlike other transparent materials, the glass block is:
- waterproof
- non-porous
- UV-resistant
- frost- and thaw-resistant
- dimensionally stable over time
- immune to corrosion
These characteristics make it ideal for exterior applications, façades, exposed walls, vertical skylights, and areas subject to severe climatic conditions.
2. Waterproofing and absence of porosity
The glass block is a completely sealed element, featuring:
- pressed glass walls
- an internally hermetically sealed chamber
- total absence of porosity
This means:
- zero water absorption
- zero infiltration
- zero moisture-related degradation
- zero risk of mould or internal efflorescence
Mortar and joints must be executed correctly to ensure continuity of waterproofing.
3. UV resistance
Glass is naturally resistant to ultraviolet radiation:
- it does not yellow
- it does not fade
- it does not lose transparency
- it does not degrade over time
Satin, coloured, or textured surfaces maintain their aesthetic appearance even after decades of exposure.
4. Frost and thaw resistance
Glass block is one of the few transparent materials suitable for extreme climates.
Characteristics:
- certified frost resistance
- no formation of micro-cracks
- no delamination
- no loss of structural integrity
The sealed internal air chamber prevents water ingress, eliminating the risk of expansion due to freezing.
5. Wind resistance and external loads
Glass block walls are classified as non-load-bearing walls, but they are designed to resist horizontal loads generated by:
- wind
- atmospheric pressure
- accidental impacts
- vibrations
Resistance depends on:
- reinforcement
- mortar
- wall geometry
- properly dimensioned joints
6. Corrosion resistance
Glass block is completely immune to corrosion because:
- it contains no exposed metals
- it does not react with oxygen
- it does not react with moisture
- it does not react with saline agents
It is ideal for:
- coastal areas
- marine environments
- façades exposed to salt spray
- swimming pools and spas
7. Resistance to acid rain and atmospheric pollution
Glass is chemically stable:
- it is not affected by acid rain
- it does not react with pollutants
- it does not undergo surface erosion
- it maintains its brightness over time
Satin surfaces may require periodic cleaning, but they do not degrade.
8. Resistance to thermal variations
Glass block withstands:
- rapid thermal changes
- direct sunlight
- sudden shading
- extreme seasonal variations
The sealed internal structure ensures dimensional stability.
9. Fundamental warning: what has been tested and what has NOT been tested. Tests refer exclusively to the glass block.
Weather-resistance tests certify:
- the behaviour of the glass
- the stability of the internal chamber
- UV resistance
- frost resistance
- moisture resistance
No installation system has been certified.
Weather resistance of the finished wall depends on:
- mortar
- reinforcement
- joints
- sealants
- complementary materials
If an installer uses:
- unsuitable mortar
- non-waterproof joints
- non-resistant sealants
- non-compliant materials
The declared performance CANNOT be guaranteed.
10. Technical responsibility notice (mandatory)
The performance values reported derive exclusively from official tests carried out on glass blocks.
Future Glass Block:
- does not certify installation systems
- does not guarantee the weather resistance of the finished work
- cannot be responsible for installation carried out by third parties
- cannot guarantee performance if materials different from those used in the tests are employed
Final verification of the work must be carried out by:
- the designer
- site management
- the competent authority
